Oh yes, certainly, I'm sure back then having a picture taken was a very expensive thing and they didn't want to waste a picture by blinking or looking the wrong way at the wrong moment!
Yes, I understand that but it does unfortunately make them look miserable by today's standards.

The cost might be a reason, but also remember that photography used to require very long time exposures, so it was easier to stay serious than to keep smiling for several minutes :)
